The goal in American Football is to cross the endzone carrying the ball. This is not as simple as it sounds. There are defenders willing to do anything to stop that from happening. A typical football field is 91 meters long (100 yards) and 48 meters wide. There is a goalpost at the end of each endzone.

Each team in order to achive their goal, score a touchdown, have to advance the football to the endzone. In order to keep possession of the ball the team has 4 tries, they are called "downs", to cover 10 yards (or 9.1 meters). If they do not succeed the ball goes to the other team. Now there is another way to score except crossing the endzone with the ball. The ball can be kicked over and through the goalpost. That is called "field goal" and counts for 3 poits instead of the 7 points normally given for a touchdown.
